Pregnancy & Dental Care

Are you expecting? You probably have a great deal on your mind right now, such as visits to the doctor, buying baby supplies and picking a name for your baby. So, visiting the dentist is probably one of the last things on your mind right now. But taking time with our dentist should be an important part of your prenatal care. Although you may not realize it, this can be a tough time for your smile and there are dental issues related directly to pregnancy.

When you are expecting, the levels of acid in your mouth increase, and you will eventually experience morning sickness (if you have not already). These two things can heighten your risk for tooth decay. As the amounts of estrogen and progesterone in your body increase, the strength of your jawbone may be affected, and these hormonal changes can also increase your risk of gingivitis.

While pregnancy does come with some dental challenges, the good news is that you can visit Apollonia Dental for treatments at any time. However, the best time for elective dentistry is often during the second trimester. If you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or think that you might be pregnant, please let Dr. James McGrath and our team know when you schedule your visit.
