What can I do to prevent gum disease?
Gum disease is a threat, not just to your oral health, but to your overall health and wellness. Prevention of gum disease is a high priority of ours: an ounce of prevention is definitely worth a pound of cure where this disease is concerned!
While some factors that affect your risk for developing gum disease like your gender, your age, and your genetics are outside of your control, there are many steps you can take in your daily life to reduce your risk of gum disease, such as:
- Brushing and flossing as directed using good technique (one of our skilled dental hygienists will be happy to discuss proper brushing and flossing technique with you!)
- Visiting our office at least twice a year for your professional cleanings (more often if it is determined necessary)
- Not smoking
- Eating a variety of nutritious foods including plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables
- Drinking plenty of water
- Reducing stress
- Avoiding clenching or grinding your teeth (we can help!)
We’re happy to help you develop a home-care routine that, combined with regular office visits, will give you the best chance at keeping gum disease at bay. Give our Middleton, CT dental office a call to schedule an appointment.
